About Andrés Escobar
Andrés Escobar was a Colombian soccer player who played professionally from 1986 to 1994. He started his senior career with Atletico Nacional, whose youth academy he had played from 1985 to 1986.In 1989, he moved to Switzerland, where he signed with BSC Young Boys and played for a year. He returned to Colombia for a second stint with Atletico Nacional in 1990. Between 1988 and 1994, he appeared in 51 matches on behalf of the Colombian senior national team.
Family Life
He was the son of Dario Escobar, a banker. He was the brother of Santiago Escobar, the retired soccer player, who was also on the roster for Atletico Nacional. He was engaged to Pamela Cascardo, whom he had been dating for five years as of his death.
Achievements
He won the 1991 Primera A, 1989 Copa Interamericana and the 1989 Copa Libertadores while playing with Atletico Nacional.
Death
He was shot to death on July 2, 1994, six days after his own goal in a 1994 FIFA World Cup match with the United States contributed to Columbia’s exit from the tournament. He was 27.
