About Andrew Ellicott
Ellicott was recognized as one of the most instrumental surveyors of the 19th century who helped several people map their homes in America.
Family
He was the eldest child of his parents Joseph Ellicot and Judith. He married Sarah Brown in 1775.
Education
He studied at the local Quaker school.
Career
Ellicott worked with American surveyor David Rittenhouse and Bishop James Madison on the survey of the Mason-Dixon line for the borders between Delaware and Maryland.
He received a commission from George Washington in 1776, to become the U.S. representative on the commission for the survey of the southern border between the Spanish lands along the Gulf of Mexico coast in Florida and the United States.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania had earlier in 1774 assigned him to the planning of the city of Erie on the south shore of Lake Erie.
The surveyor wrote several books and publications including "Astronomical Observations, &c. Communicated by Andrew Ellicott, Esq." (1818).
