About Andy Hug
Andy Hug was a prominent karateka and kickboxer from Switzerland. He was a heavyweight fighter. He has been recognized internationally as one of the greatest kickboxers in history. He was also recognized for his incredible athleticism, kicking skills and speed.
At a younger age, Hug wanted to become a footballer but later ended up in kickboxing. At the age of ten, he started practicing Kyokushin karate. Three years later, he was among the top teenage fighters in his country. At the age of fifteen, he rose to prominence after winning the 1979 Swiss Oyama Cup.
Due to his unique potential, he was called to the Swiss national Kyokushin team although he was younger than the required age.
Hug won so many silverwares and competed with several top-class opponents such as Koen Scharrenberg, Heinz Muntweiler, Michael Thompson, Akira Masuda and Kenji Midori.
Family
He was born to Arthur and Madelaine Hug-Baumann. His matrilineal grandparents were called Fridy, and Herrmann Baumann. In 1993, he wedded Ilona Hug but divorced her in 2000. He birthed a child named Seya Hug.
Awards
In 1981, he won the gold medal at the 4 Countries Team Tournament. The same year, he also won the Middleweight bronze medal at the Dutch Open. Again, in 1985, he was the Heavyweight gold medalist at the European Championships. Two years later, at the same tournament, he won the Heavyweight Bronze medal. He was also the Heavyweight Gold medal winner at the 1989 European Championships. That same year, he won a silver medal in Budapest. In 1986, he won the bronze medal at the British Open.
Hug also won other silverwares including a gold medal at the 1992 Osaka World Cup Open, gold medal at 1982, 1984, and 1985 Swiss Championships, and a gold medal at the 1982 and 1985 Ibusz Oyama Cup.
Death
He died from complications of leukemia in 2000.
Trivia
He has been called to the Switzerland national U-16 football team. Hug studied butchery.
At the age of seventeen, he was a co-founder. He was nicknamed The Blue Eyed Samurai.
