Many have argued that Ann Widdecombe developed an interest in politics when she worked for Michael Ancram as his personal assistant in the 1970s. She later served in Surrey’s Runnymede District Council. Then a component of the famous Conservative Party, she was selected to represent the people of Maidstone and The Weald in United Kingdom’s parliament in 1987.
Three years later, Widdecombe was made a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State. She went on to serve in different positions before being named an MP in the European Parliament as a representative of South West England. In 2019, she moved from the Conservative Party to join the Reform UK.

Her dad, James Murray Widdecombe, was a civil servant. She also spent most of her childhood with her mum, Rita Noreen Plummer.

Before moving to the University of Birmingham to read Latin, she studied at the La Sainte Union Convent School, and Singapore’s Royal Naval School. She also attended the Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
