Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most famous first ladies of the United States. She was the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt who served from 1933 to 1945. Eleanor Roosevelt gained much notoriety after serving as United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945 to 1952.
Early Life
This U.S. First Lady was born to Anna Hall Roosevelt and Elliott Roosevelt. She was initially tutored privately but was eventually sent to Allenwood Academy in 1899 and graduated in 1902.
Career
Roosevelt assumed office as the First Lady of New York from 1929 to 1932. Her controversial nature was quite evident due to her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights for African-Americans. She later became the 1st Chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights from 1946 to 1952. 1947 saw her rise to the position of 1st United States Representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, a position she held till 1953. Roosevelt also held the position of 1st Chair of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women from 1961 to 1962, when she died.

The renowned politician was married to Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1905 to 1945.
She passed away on November 7, 1962. A day after her death, flags of the United States were lowered to half-staff all around the world.
