About Anna Howard Shaw
Reverend Doctor Anna Howard Shaw, physician, devoted feminist, and brilliant speaker, strived to make an impact through her ministry, to improve society through the temperance and suffrage movements, and finally to promote world peace through the League of Nations.
Family and Background
On February 14, 1847, Anna Shaw was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. At the age of four, she and her family travelled and settled in the U.S. There, she was able to attend high school after the Civil War (1861-1865) by moving into the home of a married sister.
She became involved in the Methodist church, preaching her first sermon at the age of twenty-three and in 1873, she enrolled at Albion College.
Career
She took over as pastor of a church in East Dennis, Massachusetts, but her application for ordination was denied because of her gender, first by the New England Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and then by the General Conference, which also revoked her license.
In the end, she was able to secure her license after the Methodist Church voted in 1873.
She left her priesthood in 1885 to devote her full time to the causes of suffrage and temperance. When Susan B. Anthony was elected president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1892, Anna Shaw was appointed vice president (1892–1904) and president (1904–15).
Death
She died while on a speaking tour in support of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson's League of Nations call for world peace.
Achievements
In 1880, she was one of the first women to be ordained as the Methodist minister.
She pursued medical studies at Boston University securing her M.D. in 1886.
