About Anne Carson
Anne Carson is a Toronto, Canadian-born poet, translator, and professor who has led teachings concerning classics, leisure, and creative writings at prestigious universities such as the University of Michigan and New York University.
Family and Education
Anne Carson was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Carson. She lived most of her life in Canada and enrolled in St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto. Even though Carson took a break due to academic stress, she returned in 1974 to complete her bachelor's degree and then her master's in 1975. She finally acquired her Ph.D. in 1981 and studied Greek metrics at the University of St. Andrews.
Career and Notable Works
Her career began in 1979 after her adequate training at the University of Toronto. Carson moved on to teach comparative literature, classics, and creative writing at various universities, including Michigan and Princeton. The poet has a collection of more than 20 original works and translations. She has translated many tragedies from ancient Greece, including Aeschylus’ “Agamemnon” and Sophocles’ “Antigone”.
Awards and Honors
She’s won numerous awards, including the Governor General's Award for English-Language poetry. She was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2005.
She received the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature in 2020.
The non-profit organization PEN America honoured Carson with the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.
She received a number of fellowships, including Guggenheim, Rockefeller Bellagio Center and MacArthur Fellowships.
Personal Life
Carson is married to famous artist Robert Currie and is still in a romantic relationship as of 2021
