The Leicester native began reading from an early age. While at the University of Warwick, she studied history and politics.
Writing Career
Her books for younger readers include the famed Killer Cat Series, which chronicles the adventures of killer cat Tuffy and its owner, Ellie. Among other children’s books are “Bill's New Frock,” “Under a Silver Moon" and “Goggle-Eyes.” Her novels for older readers include, “Shades of Scarlet,” “The Tulip Touch” and “Madame Doubtfire.”
Personal Life
She was once divorced but found herself a new partner, Dick Warren.
Recognition
Among other prizes, she's received a number of prestigious awards in children’s books, most famous among them the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize in 1990, Children's Author of the Year Award in 1990, and the Children's Author of the Year in 1991 and 1994. The latter honor was from the British Book Awards. She is also a multiple Carnegie Medalist, having received the award in 1989 and 1992 for her works "Goggle-Eyes" and "Flour Babies", respectively.
