About Anne of Austria
Anne of Austria was an infanta of Portugal and Spain, who became the “Queen of France” from 1615 until 1643. In addition, she served as the regent to her son King Louis XIV, during his early reign until 1651.
Background
She was born at the beautiful “Benavente Palace” in Valladolid, Spain and was the first daughter of King Philip III of Spain and Margaret of Austria. Despite being born in Spain, she was called “Anne of Austria” because at the time, the Spanish rulers belonged to the House of Austria’s senior branch.
Queen of France & Regent
She was betrothed to “King Louis XIII” of France when she was eleven years old. Her father bestowed 500,000 crowns upon her as dowry, including other magnificent gems. Eventually, she married King Louis XIII in November 1615 to become the Queen of France. However, many accounts of French court cases emphasized many difficulties in her marriage.
After King Louis XIII’s death, she became regent to her son King Louis XIV, during his early minority reign until 1651. However, she disapproved of her son’s marital adultery with Maria Theresa, her niece and daughter-in-law.
Death
She died of breast cancer, aged 64, on January 20, 1666.
