About Annie Dodge Wauneka
Annie Dodge Wauneka was one of the most influential and celebrated "Navajo Nation Council" members of the Navajo Nation in the 20th century. She is remembered for her immense efforts in improving health care, education, sanitation and the entire standard of living for the people of Navajo.
Background & Education
She was the daughter of the Navajo tribe chief Henry Chee Dodge. Annie was born in Deer Spring, Arizona Territory. She attended the "Bureau of Indian Affairs Boarding School" and then the "Albuquerque Indian School". She also held a BSc in Public Health from the University of Arizona.
Career & Contributions to Navajo
After her election to the Tribal Council in 1951, she was appointed to lead the "Health and Welfare Committee". She accomplished much during her 27 years as a council member, including translating medical terminology into Navajo, hosting a radio show about medical conditions and improving the community's health system. Her efforts enhanced treatment for pregnant women, infants and alcoholism. Additionally, during her tenure on the council, housing and sanitation conditions greatly improved.
Honors
In 1963, President Lyndon Johnson awarded her the "Presidential Medal of Freedom". She also earned several honorary degrees and was part of the "National Women's Hall of Fame".
Death
She died from Alzheimer's disease at age 87 on November 10, 1997.
