About Anthony Wayne
Anthony Wayne achieved fame through his military career before he pursued a brief career in politics. The American soldier first came to prominence through a militia unit he raised in Pennsylvania to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Prior to his stint in the Continental Army, he worked as a surveyor and a tanner (in a tannery owned by his father). He was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 1st District of Georgia from 1791 to 1792. He returned to the military in 1792, when he was made the Senior Officer of the United States Army, serving until his death four years later.
Family Life
He was the son of Isaac Wayne, a Pennsylvania tanner and his wife, Elizabeth Iddings. His marriage to Mary Penrose in 1766 produced two children, including Isaac Wayne, who represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Death
He died while returning from a Detroit-based military post to Pennsylvania on December 15, 1796.
