About Anton Webern
Anton Friedrich Wilhelm von Webern, shortened as Anton Webern, was a brilliant Australian music composer and conductor in the 20th century. He is remembered for his exceptional atonal and serial works and was a pivotal figure in the “Second Viennese School”.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Vienna, Austria. His mother was a brilliant singer and began teaching him music at age five. He was also educated at the Klagenfurt Humanistisches Gymnasium, graduating in 1902. In late 1902, he enrolled in the University of Vienna’s Musicological Institute, where he studied musicology and composition. He also began private studies with legendary composer Arnold Schoenberg and received his music doctorate in 1906.
Career Highlights & Major Works
He began his career in 1908 as a music conductor of various theatres in Bad Ischi, Teplice, Danzig and Szczecin. “Five Movements for String Quartet” and “Six Pieces for Orchestra” were amongst his notable works in the 1900s. He also oversaw the shows of Schoenberg’s Society for Private Musical Performances from 1908 to 1922.
During his career, he conducted the “Schubetbund”, “Modeling Male Chorus”, “Vienna Workers’ Chorus” and the “Vienna Workers’ Symphony”.
He was also notable for his “twelve-tone technique” and his significant role in developing the “Second Viennese School”.
Death
He was accidentally shot and murdered at age 62 on September 15, 1945.
