About Antonio Berni
Antonio Berni was a figurative artist from Argentina best known for his works, including “Juanito Laguna”, “Ramona Montiel”, and “La Manifestición.” He was associated with the Nuevo Realismo movement.
Early Life
Berna was born in Rosario, Argentina. He was of Italian ancestry. When he was 9, he worked as an apprentice for a stained glass company and later attended the Rosario Catalá Center, where he started painting and was known as a child prodigy. By 17, he already had his paintings in exhibitions.
Career
In 1925, he received a scholarship to study in Europe and Berni decided to go to Spain and later France. During that period in Europe, he produced 5 paintings, including “Paisaje de Paris” and “Desnudo.”
He returned to Argentina in 1930 and set up the group Nuevo Realismo. Most of his works after that time depicted the lives of his country’s working-class group. In his later years, Berni moved to New York City and the older he got, the more reflective his works became. He painted “Apocalipsis” and “La Crucifixion” in 1980 and passed away the following year in 1981.
