About Antonio Gramsci
Antonio Francesco Gramsci was an Italian philosopher, linguist, journalist, writer and politician. His writings were on political theory, Marxist philosophy, sociology, linguistics and history.
During his 11-year imprisonment for his activities as a leader of the Communist Party of Italy, he wrote over 30 notebooks, popular amongst them being his “Prison Notebooks” essay series. He is also widely recognized for formulating the theory of cultural hegemony.
Family Life
He was one of seven sons born to Giuseppina Marcias and Francesco Gramsci. He married Julia Schucht in 1922. They had two sons. However, he never met his second son, who was born in his first year in prison, 1926.
Imprisonment
The Fascist Italian regime, at the time, led by Benito Mussolini arrested Gramsci (then the leader of the Communist Party) in November 1926. It followed stringent measures put in place after the alleged assassination attempt of Mussolini.
Death
He died on 27 April 1937 from deteriorated health while in prison.
