About Antonio López de Santa Anna
Appointed as the President of Mexico in 1833, Antonio López de Santa Anna wrote his name in the history books after serving as the political head of his country for eleven terms. He was very active during his country’s fight for independence, though he initially opposed the idea. Before being named as the president, he served as the vice for 2 years, between 1837 and 1839.
He was also a popular figure in the military which he joined at age 16. During his active days in the army, he was involved in lots of wars including the “Mexican War of Independence”. Though he was highly-respected in his homeland, most historians describe him as one of the leaders whose actions prevented the growth of the country.
Family
His full name, which is quite lengthy, was “Antonio de Padua María Severino López de Santa Anna y Pérez de Lebrón”. His parents were called Licenciado Antonio and Manuela Pérez de Lebrón. His initial marriage to Inés García produced four children namely Manuel, María de Guadalupe, Antonio López de Santa Anna y García, and María del Carmen.
After the death of his wife, in 1844, he married a 16-year-old lady called María de Los Dolores de Tosta, though they rarely stayed together.
Achievements
During his days at the military, he received lots of medals such as “Order of Charles III” and “Order of Guadalupe”.
Trivia
He was also referred to as “Man of Destiny”.
