About Ara Parseghian
Ara Parseghian was an American footballer and coach. He was best known for coaching the University of Notre Dame team to the 1966 and 1973 national championships.
Background
Parseghian was the youngest of three children. His father was Armenian and his mother was French. Growing up, he played a lot of sports. He joined his high school’s football team when he was a junior.
Professional Career
After serving in the Second World War, he joined Miami University’s football team in 1946. The following year, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and made his debut in 1948, eventually helping his team win the 1948 AAFC Championships. He retired after sustaining a hip injury.
He started his coaching career at Miami University and then later at Northwestern University and Notre Dame. In 1980, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
Parseghian married Kathleen Davis in 1948. They had two children: Karan and Michael. He passed away in 2017.
