About Aristide Maillol
Famed for his specialty in statues of idealized female nudes, most works of the eccentric French sculptor had a mythological background. He also attempted to express clarity and balance of form in his artwork.
Early Life
Born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, he was educated at École des Beaux-Arts. During his early career, he designed tapestry and joined the decorative Nabis group.
Notable Works
One of his earliest works was “A Seated Woman,” which was inspired by his wife. His best known works include, “Action in Chains” which was a 1905 bronze sculpture commissioned by French socialist, Louis Auguste Blanqui. Five years later, he created a sculpture of a nude woman he titled “Flora, Nude.” This was followed by more statues of nude women including “Bathing Woman with Raised Arms” and “Nymph.”
Additional Fact
By his late 30s, Maillol had risen to become a distinguished personality in modern art history.
Trivia
Some of his sculptures, “Summer,” “Venus Without Arms” and “Kneeling Woman: Monument to Debussy,” were placed as decorative pieces on the staircase of N.Y.C's Metropolitan Opera House.
