Assante is of Irish Italian descent. However, he was born and raised in Manhattan, Washington, by his parents. His father was Armand Anthony Assante Sr., an accomplished Italian painter, and his mother, Theresa Healy, an English and music teacher.
Career
At age seventeen, Assante began his acting career at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He landed his first professional theatre role in 1969 and won the Best Actor of the Academy in the same year. Assante spent a decade in theatre acting before making his first film appearance in the 1970s.
“The Lords of Flatbush,” in 1974, was Assante’s debut film appearance. After that, however, he starred in NBC’s 1970s soap operas ``How to Survive a Marriage” and “The Doctors.”
His most famous roles include the character of John Gotti in HBO’s 1997 film “Gotti” and Nietzsche in “When Nietzsche Wept” (2007).

As of 2021, he had received four nominations at the Golden Globe Award. Assante was awarded the Emmy Award for his role in the 1996 film “Gotti.” In addition, he has received over ten lifetime achievements awards internationally.
