Education
He attended Pacific Union College and graduated with a master’s degree in library science from the University of Chicago.
Career
One of Bontemps’ acclaimed works “Black Thunder” was published in 1936. The work received remarkable reviews from popular journals such as the “Saturday review of Literature”. The following year, he published a children’s novel titled “Sad-Faced Boy” and released “Drums at Dusk” two years later, after receiving a Rosenwald fellowship.
He also collaborated with American writer Jack Conroy on the books “The Sooner Hound” in 1942 and “They Seek a City” in 1945.
Honors
The writer was a recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships.
Death
After suffering a heart attack, he died on June 4, 1973 at the age of 71.
