Known for his charisma and amazing screen presence, TV presenter Art Fleming made NBC’s hit game show “Jeopardy!” a hit for many decades. He hosted the game show from 1964 and 1975 and then later from 1978-1979.
Childhood and Early Career
Born to Austrian parents who dreamed of someday making it big in the United States, Fleming landed his first major role in a Broadway musical when he was a young boy. He had dreams of becoming a full-time actor once he graduated from school but was forced to put those dreams on hold when he served in World War II. He resumed his acting pursuit after the war, starring in several radio and TV commercials.
TV Host Career
Fleming was spotted in a TV commercial by the creator of “Jeopardy!” He had never hosted a show before, but quickly became a big hit with the show’s executives and viewers. He also starred in numerous films and shows, including “MacArthur” and “The Moneychangers.”
Personal Life
He was married twice, first to Peggy Ann Eliss and then later to Becky Lynn. He had three children and was active in charity work. Fleming died of pancreatic cancer in 1995.
Trivia
His “Jeopardy!” successor, Alex Trebek also died of pancreatic cancer 25 years later.
