About Art Fry
Arthur Fry, shortened as Art Fry, is a retired American scientist and inventor. He is famously known as the co-inventor and creator of the “Post-it Note” or “Sticky Note,” pieces of paper with glue strips on their backs, made for the temporal attachment of notes and messages to documents and many other surfaces.
Background & Education
He is originally from Owatonna, Minnesota, but spent his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri, and Iowa.
In 1955, the scientist earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota. As an undergraduate, he worked at “3M” as a product development researcher.
“Post-it Note” Invention
In 1974, Fry attended a seminar that saw Spencer Silver - a scientist at “3M,” present his uniquely designed adhesive. The adhesive had a molecular structure, which made it strong enough to stick to surfaces but weak enough to create a temporal bond.
As the legend tells, Fry, after making unsuccessful bookmarks in his workbook, tried using Silver’s adhesive and realized that when the adhesive was coated on paper, it could make a perfect bookmark without damaging the pages of your book. He then experimented numerous times with the adhesive and paper, which broadened the concept and birthed the innovation of “Post-it Note” as a commercial product.
In 1980, “3M” released “Post-it Notes” to the American market, and by 2006, it was sold in at least 100 countries.
