About Art Tatum
Renowned American pianist Art Tatum is widely considered as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, pianist of all-time. His success story began in 1927 when he had the opportunity to perform on a local radio station named WSPD.
After gaining some amount of fame, he started performing in clubs and at major cities in the United States. His career received a massive boost in 1932 after he joined the band of singer Adelaide Hall. With the band, he helped in the recording of the single "I'll Never Be the Same" which was released later that year.
His appearances on shows such as BBC’s “Starlight” further boosted his international reputation. His album titled “God Is in the House” won a Grammy Award in 1973.
Family
He was raised by his parents Arthur Tatum Sr. and Mildred Hoskins. He had a child with Marnette Jackson named Orlando.
Education
Tatum studied at Jefferson School in Toledo before he had his training at the Toledo School of Music.
Trivia
He was born with vision problems and almost went blind in his 20s after he was engaged in a fight.
As a child, he was inspired by the likes of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller.
