About Artemisia Gentileschi
Artemisia Gentileschi began professional painting at age fifteen. After observing and learning from her father, Artemisia produced many works which can be seen in many well-known museums and galleries.
Most of her works were about women from the Bible, and other historical stories. Some of her well-known works were titled “Judith Slaying Holofernes”, “Lucretia” and “Samson and Delilah”.
Sexual Assault
Artemisia was sexually assaulted by fellow Italian painter Agostino Tassi, who was then working with her dad in 1611. According to historical accounts, Tassi was accompanied by another man called Cosimo Quorli who also took advantage of the little girl.
Family
Her dad was also a painter called Orazio Gentileschi.
Facts
She was the first lady to join the Accademia di Arte del Disegno as a member.
Her life inspired Susan Vreeland’s 2002 novel titled “The Passion of Artemisia”.
Technology company, Google developed a special Doodle to mark her 427th birthday in 2020.
