About Arthur Ashe
Arthur Ashe was an American professional tennis player remembered for being the first black male player ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. He is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He died of AIDS in 1996 at the age of 49.
Family Life
He was born to Mattie Cunningham and Arthur Ashe Sr. He had a younger brother named Johnnie. He married photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy in 1977. He and Jeanne adopted a daughter named Camera in 1986.
Trivia
He reportedly contracted HIV while undergoing a blood transfusion in the early 1980s.
In 1993, which was the same year he died, the then President of the United States President Bill Clinton posthumously honored him with America's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
