About Arthur Roy Mitchell
Arthur Roy Mitchell was an American painter popularly known for creating illustrations that depicted the cowboy and western culture and lifestyle.
Life
As a young boy, Mitchell started his art career by providing sketches of cowboys and other western themes to local newspapers. His career was put on hold after he served in World War I. Upon his return, he moved to New York City and attended the Grand Central School of Art. By 1940, over 160 of his paintings had been featured in magazines.
He returned to his hometown of Trinidad, Colorado, where he started teaching art at the Trinidad State Junior College. He designed the “Rush to Rockies” symbol to remember the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush. Mitchell was also interested in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings.
He died in 1977.
Awards & Recognition
Mitchell became an honorary member of the Cowboy Artists of America in 1972. The following year he was inducted into the National Academy of Western Artists. He also received the Honorary Trustees Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
