About Aruna Roy
Roy became the President of the National Federation of Indian Women in 2008, succeeding Dr. K. Saradamoni. She is widely known as a campaigner for rights of the poor and sidelined such as Right to Information, the Right to Work and the Right to Food.
Family
She was born to Hema and E. D. Jayaram. Roy and Sanjit were married in 1970.
Education
She is an alumnus of Delhi University and the National Academy of Administration.
Career
She was a member of the Union Territories, an administrative division in India. She worked as an assistant to the supervising administrator of Tiruchi district.
Roy was transferred to Delhi after her marriage to Sanjit. There she served as Sub-Divisional Magistrate, overseeing six police jurisdictions and managing student protests and election duty. She was later appointed the deputy secretary for finance and rose to become Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
She joined her husband at the Social Work Research Centre (also known as the Barefoot College) in 1974 which he established in 1972. Roy resigned from civil service and worked with Sanjit for social and economic development of the village.
Roy later founded Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan, an Indian political organization for the Right to Information Act in May 1990.
Achievements
In 1985, she organized the first women’s rights gathering in India which centered on underprivileged rural women.
Through Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan and the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI), the Right to Information Act was successfully passed in India in 2005.
Honors
She won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2000 and the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award in 2010.
