About Asa Griggs Candler
Asa Griggs Candler was a popular American business executive who founded the Coca-Cola Company beverage company in 1892. He purchased the recipe from John Stith Pemberton, an American pharmacist, for a fee believed to be around $238.98.
Aside from that, he also owned other well-known structures in the United States. He built the Candler Building in 1906, which at that time was the tallest building in Atlanta. His Candler Building, which is located in New York City, has been included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Politics
As one of the most popular figures in Atlanta, Candler was elected as the city’s 41st mayor in 1916, a position he held for three years. He was instrumental in rebuilding the city after the infamous fire outbreak in 1917.
Family
He was the son of Samuel Charles and Martha Candler. He had ten other brothers including renowned bishop, Warren Akin Candler. He married Lucy Elizabeth Howard in 1878 and together they raised five kids. Their children were William Candler, Lucy Beall Candler, Charles Howard Candler, Walter T. Candler, and Asa G. Candler, Jr.
Facts
He was also a philanthropist and supported Emory University with $7 million.
A 55-acre park located in Atlanta has been named after him.
