About Asafa Powell
Asafa Powell gained national attention in 2003 when he won the 100 m event at the Jamaican Championship. He went on to participate in other recognized international tournaments before making his Olympic debut in 2004.
Competing in both the 100 and 200 m events, Powell won gold medals in both disciplines at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2004. Two years later, he won the 100 m events at the Commonwealth Games, and the World Athletics Final.
A member of Jamaica’s 4x100 relay team, he helped them to win gold at the 2009 and 2015 editions of the World Championships. He won a gold medal in the same event at the 2016 Olympic Games which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Family
He lost his brother Michael Powell in 2002. The following year, his other brother Vaughn died from a heart attack. He’s the younger brother of sprinter Donovan Powell. This athlete has been married to Alyshia Miller, a Canadian model, since 2019.
Education
He graduated from Charlemont High School. He also attended Ewarton Primary School.
Drug issues
Ahead of the World Athletics Championships in 2013, Powell and fellow Jamaican runner Sherone Simpson were accused of taking banned substances. The following year, they were given an 18-month ban, but it was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Trivia
He partnered with Usain Bolt during his time in the Jamaican team.
From 2005 to 2008, he broke and set new 100m records twice.
Growing up, his dream was to become a mechanic.
Since 2001, he has been a member of the University of Technology’s Maximising Velocity and Power Track & Field Club in Jamaica.
