About Ashton Eaton
Ashton James Eaton, an American decathlete, dominated the sport in the 2010s, taking home gold medals at both the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to those medals, he won multiple IAAF world championship titles.
Family and Background
He was raised in a small Oregon town by a single mother. Growing up, he competed in a wide array of sports, including track and field, wrestling, and gridiron football. He had his high school education at Mountain View High School. As a senior, he won state titles in the 400-meter run and the long jump.
Career
He received a partial decathlon scholarship to attend the University of Oregon in 2006. He won five National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships during his time at Oregon: three in the decathlon and two in the heptathlon. While still a student at Oregon, he made his first impression on the world of international athletics in 2010 when he won the NCAA indoor heptathlon championship.
He won a silver medal in the decathlon at the IAAF global championships in 2011 to earn his first international medal. He continued to dominate the IAAF championships into 2015 where he won another gold medal, establishing himself as one of the best athletes to grace the world stage.
He won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the 2016 World Indoor Championships and another gold medal in the decathlon at the Olympics. He retired a year later.

Up until 2018, when Frenchman Kevin Mayer broke it, Eaton's record stood.
