About Atul Gawande
Atul Gawande is a renowned American journalist and surgeon who served in the Department of Health and Human Services as a senior consultant during the Bill Clinton administration. He has also worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston where he practiced endocrine surgery.
Other renowned institutions that he has worked for include Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Journalism and writing career
Gawande began his journalism profession as a contributor to the Slate online magazine. In 1998, he became one of the staff writers of The New Yorker. Prior to that, he has had lots of articles published by the newspaper.
Known to be a good writer, Gawande has published many books, mostly on health and wellbeing. His maiden book entitled “Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science” was released in 2002. Some of his other well-known books are “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” and “The Checklist Manifesto”.
Family
His parents were both doctors and he grew up with a sister. He has been married to Kathleen Hobson.
Education
In 1983, he completed his education at Athens High School. Four years later, he finished his political science and biology studies at Stanford University. He further studied at Balliol College, Oxford; Harvard School of Public Health; and Harvard Medical School.
Achievements
In 2014, he received the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science. Two years later, the Governor of Massachusetts honored him with the “Award in the Humanities” prize.
Trivia
United States President Joe Biden named him to the COVID-19 Advisory Board in 2020.
Two years before that, he was appointed the CEO of Haven Healthcare, a non-profit healthcare organization.
