About August Strindberg
August Strindberg was a Swedish playwright, essayist, novelist, poet and painter. In his forty years of activity as a writer, he published over sixty plays and thirty plus works on genres and fields such as fiction, history, autobiography, politics and cultural analysis. He is regarded as the “father of modern Swedish literature”. His notable works include the novels “The Red Room” and “Inferno” and the plays; “The Father”, “Creditors”, “Miss Julie” and “The Ghost Sonata”.
Family Life
His father, Carl Oscar Strindberg was a shipping agent and his mother, Eleonora Ulrika Norling was a serving-maid. He had three daughters and one son from his 14-year marriage to his first wife, Finnish actress Siri von Essen; one daughter from his 2-year marriage to his second wife, Austrian writer Frida Uhl; and another daughter from his 3-year marriage to Swedish-Norwegian actress Harriet Bosse.
Death
He died from pneumonia and stomach cancer on May 14, 1912.
