About August Wilson
August Wilson was a famous American playwright whose works mostly portrayed the life and challenges of the Black-American community. He gained recognition for his numerous award-winning plays such as “Jitney” and “Fences” which were included in his ten series play entitled “The Pittsburgh Cycle”.
Throughout his career, he worked with some popular actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, and James Earl Jones.
Family
He was initially named Frederick August Kittel Jr. and was the son of Daisy Wilson and Frederick August Kittel Sr. He married twice before tying the knot with Constanza Romero, a costume designer, in 1994. His previous wives were Brenda Burton and Judy Oliver.
Education
He had a short spell at Central Catholic High School before moving to Connelley Vocational High School. He also studied at Gladstone High School.
Awards
His works earned him numerous awards which included the Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize, and the Drama Desk Awards. He was also shortlisted for the Academy Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards on many occasions.
This playwright was a member of both the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, and the American Theater Hall of Fame.
Trivia
Before rising to fame, he worked as a gardener and porter.
