About Augustus Moore Herring
When it comes to early aviation in the United States, Augustus Moore Herring was not only a crucial figure but also a connecting factor. He has worked with nearly every significant American aviator, including Chanut, Langley, the Wright Brothers, and Starling Burgess. The aviator also holds the distinction of being the first person to fly a real, powered, heavier-than-air aircraft.
Early life
The aviator was born to William F. Herring and Cloe Perry Conyers. He later enrolled and graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology. While there, he built his man-carrying glider in 1893. Although it crashed on takeoff, he was later hired by Octave Chanute to develop more prototypes in the 1890s.
Career
Herring later took his experiments to the next level after partnering with fellow aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley in 1895. During 1896, he designed a weight-shift aircraft using a compressed air motor. At the end of 1896, he applied for patents on his design, but the US Patents Office denied his application. After testing the plane in 1898, he invited Octave Chanute to come witness it fly. However, Herring could not take off when his previous boss arrived to watch a flight. After Chanute had left, he conducted another successful flight, witnessed by at least two people.
Later Years
The aviator joined Glenn Curtiss to create the Herring-Curtiss Company in 1909 but later left the business to start a new one with Starling Burgess a year later.
Personal Life
The aviator was married to Lillian Mellen until he died from a stroke in 1926.
