About Bal Gangadhar Tilak
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was an iconic Indian nationalist, social reformer and independence activist remembered for being the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement as well as for fiercely fighting for Indian independence from British colonial rule. The British referred to him as the "Father of the Indian unrests" as a result of his fierce defiance of the British rule. Today he regarded as one of India's first and most prominent advocates of “Swaraj” (“Self Rule”).
Personal Life
In 1871, he married Satyabhamabai Tilak when he was only 16 years old. He and Satyabhamabai remained together until his death in 1920.
Trivia
He advocated the use of force in the struggle for independence from the British colonial rule and strongly opposed Gandhi's policy of non-violence.
