About Baldur von Schirach
Baldur von Schirach was a Nazi German politician who rose in rank from the youth wing of the Nazi Party to become a member of Hitler’s intimate circle. He joined the Nazi Party on his eighteenth birthday. Six years later, in 1931, he received his appointment as the Reichsjugendfuhrer (National Youth Leader of the Nazi Party), an office he held until 1940. From 1940 until the Red Army’s invasion in May 1945, he served in the Vienna-based administrative division of Nazi Germany (Reichsgau Vienna) as Gauleiter and Reichsstatthalter.
Family Life
His father, Carl Baily Norris was a German-American theater director while his mother, Emma Middleton Lynah Tillou was an American woman. He had two older sisters and an older brother. He spoke fluent English and German. His marriage to Henriette Hoffman paved the way for him to get into Hitler’s circle. Hoffman was the daughter of Hitler’s official photographer, Heinrich.
Later Years and Death
He served 20 years in Spandau Prison, Berlin for committing crimes against humanity. On August 8, 1974 (8 years after leaving prison), he died from coronary thrombosis.
