About Barbara Graham
Barbara Graham, originally named Barbara Elaine Ford, was an infamous 20th-century American criminal and murder convict. Dubbed “Bloody Babs” by the media, she was the third woman to be gassed to death in California.
Background & Personal Life
Her promiscuous and hustling teenage life made her committed to a reformatory until being freed in 1939. She soon married, raised her first child, and attended a business college. However, her divorce in 1941 took a massive toll on her life. She became involved in risky social vices like prostitution, drug abuse, and gambling, which resulted in her serving multiple jail terms.
Murder, Arrest & Conviction
On March 9, 1953, Graham, her lover Emmett Perkins, Jack Santo, and John True participated in a futile robbery attempt in the residence of Mrs. Mabel Monahan. During the robbery, Mrs. Monahan, who was believed to be a wealthy elderly widow, did not give them any valuable items. This led to Barbara’s frustration, making her pistol whip the widow and suffocating her with a pillow. Barbara, Santo, and Perkins were soon arrested. However, although John True testified against them in exchange for his immunity, they were all found guilty and given death sentences.
Death
On June 26, 1923, aged 31, she was put to death in the San Quentin Prison gas chamber.
