About Barbara Jordan
According to Barbara Jordan, a speech she heard from Edith S. Sampson during her days in high school informed her decision to pursue a career in law. By the end of 1960, she had begun practicing law.
With her knowledge in politics, Jordan opted to contest for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1962. Her bid was unsuccessful. Four years later, she was elected into the state’s Senate. She became the first black American to occupy that position. She also represented the state at the U.S. House of Representatives from 1973 and 1979.
Her 1974 speech that she delivered at a gathering of U.S. House Judiciary Committee members during the process to impeach former President Richard Nixon made her a national treasure.
Her parents Benjamin Jordan and Arlyne Patten Jordan were devoted Christians. She had two senior sisters called Bennie Jordan Creswell and Rose Mary Jordan McGowan. She was known to be lesbian. According to historical accounts, she was in a relationship with a lady called Nancy Earl.
She attended Roberson Elementary School, and Phillis Wheatley High School before reading history and political science at Texas Southern University. She read law at the Boston University School of Law and graduated in 1959.
She was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. Jordan has been inducted into a number of honorable institutions including the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, and National Women's Hall of Fame.
In 1972, she became the first Texas woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives.
She was also the first black-American woman to work as a state governor in the U.S.
She was a member of the Democrat Party.
Had it not been for her health challenges, she would have served in the U.S. Supreme Court during the tenure of President Bill Clinton.
