About Barbara McClintock
Barbara McClintock was a renowned American scientist, known for her extensive work on the genetic makeup of maize. As part of her research, she came up with a method for visualizing the chromosomes of the crop.
She published the result of her research in her numerous books which include "The Stability of Broken Ends of Chromosomes in Zea Mays" and “The Chromosomal Constitution of Races of Maize”. She also worked for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as a researcher. In 1944, she became an associate of the National Academy of Sciences.
Family
At birth, she was named Eleanor McClintock and was born to Sara Handy and Thomas Henry McClintock. She had three siblings named Marjorie, Mignon, and Malcolm Rider "Tom".
Education
In 1919, she entered into the College of Agriculture, a department under Cornell University. She obtained her PhD from the same institution in 1927.
Recognitions
In 1983, she received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Her research earned her many awards including the National Medal of Science, and the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal.
Trivia
McClintock, alongside other prominent scientists, were featured on a series of postage stamps in 2005.
After winning the Nobel Prize, she became the only female to receive that unshared.
She was the subject of Judith Pratt’s play titled “MAIZE”.
