Background & Education
The seasoned actress was the daughter of the famous American Suffrage leader Barbara Blackman O'Neil and wealthy American businessman David O'Neil. However, she lived in Europe for the majority of her childhood. She was an alumnus of Sarah Lawrence College. O'Neil also attended the Yale School of Drama.
Acting Career Highlights
In the early 1930s, her mentor George Pierce Baker recommended her to the theater company "University Players." She then debuted on Broadway in 1932 in a play about the famous Carrie Nation. After that, she made numerous appearances on and off Broadway, including the notable 1954 Broadway adaptation of "The Portrait of a Lad."
After many years in theatrical acting, she made her film debut in 1937 in "Stella Dallas." Two years later, she rose to great prominence for her role as Ellen O'Hara in the popular film "Gone with the Wind." O'Neil also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for playing "Duchesse de Praslin" in "All This, and Heaven Too."
Cause of Death
She died from a severe heart attack aged 70 September 1980.
