About Barry Altschul
Drummer Barry Altschul rose to prominence in the late 1960s with his avant-garde style of play. He has been appreciated for decades from his time with Circle to his more recent projects as a leader of his own bands and collaborator with other renowned artists in the jazz scene.
Early Life
Growing up in the Bronx, he went to Taft High School. Prior to 1960, when he started studying with Charlie Persip, his drumming abilities were primarily self-taught.
Career
He formed the band Circle in 1969 alongside Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Anthony Braxton. Under Holland's direction, Braxton and saxophonist Sam Rivers joined him to record the legendary album “Conference of the Birds” in 1972.
He worked as a house drummer for the Italian Soul Note label. In 1995 he accepted a position as an adjunct lecturer at Sarah Lawrence College, where he stayed for two years. With the FAB trio and the bassist Adam Lane, he made two sideman appearances on the CIMP label in the 2000s.
