About Barry Cryer
He was an actor, writer and comedian. He started acting at the Windmill theatre but had to be let go due to his frequent visits to the hospital because of his eczema. He realized eczema was going to challenge his acting career but was not going to affect his writing so he started to write.
He recorded the song “The Purple People Eater” when he joined the “Expresso Bongo” cast. The song made it to the top in Finland. Together with Douglas Camfield, he released four sketches for the “Jimmy Logan Show”.
He liked to partner with John Junkin in the 1970’s for his writing. He made an appearance in “The Steam Video Company”, a comedy show. He released “You Won’t Believe This But…..” an autobiography.
Personal Life
He was born in Leeds, England and was named Barry Charles Cryer. He was an English literature student at the University of Leeds. In 1962, he married Theresa and together, they had four children. In January 2022, he died.
Achievements
In 2001, he was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Two years later, he was made an Honorary Doctor of Arts by Leeds Metropolitan University.
