About Benedetto Croce
Benedetto Croce has been eulogized for his contribution to the development of democracy in Italy. Considered a liberal, the renowned philosopher shared his ideas through his numerous books including “Philosophy of the Practical Economic and Ethic” and “History of Europe in the nineteenth century”.
He also contributed to other academic fields such as aesthetics, history, and historiography. Between 1949 and 1952, he served as the leader of the global writers’ association known as PEN International.
Political Career
Croce entered into politics after garnering some amount of fame. In 1910, he was elected into the Senate of the Kingdom of Italy. A decade later, Giovanni Giolitti, then Prime Minister of Italy, appointed him as the country’s Public Education Minister.
He later served in the Constituent Assembly of Italy before he was voted into the Senate of the Republic in 1948.
Personal Life
He married Adele Rossi in 1914, a year after the death of his domestic partner Angelina Zampanelli. His children were Elena, Lidia, Silvia, and Alda.
Education
He briefly attended the University of Naples.
Achievements
Croce was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature on sixteen different occasions.
