About Benito Juárez
Lawyer and politician Benito Juárez Garcia is remembered in history books as Mexico’s 26th president. After he completed his law studies in 1834, he practiced until his appointment as a judge in 1841.
He was the President of the Supreme Court of Mexico in 1858 when the Conservative Party pressured the sitting Mexican president Ignacio Comonfort to resign. This automatically made him Comonfort’s successor. He stayed in the position until his death in 1872.
Family Life
He was the son of Marcelino Juárez and Brigida Garcia. They both passed away when Juárez was only three. He was brought up by his uncle. He and Margarita Maza got married in October 1843 and had twelve children.
Honors
Due to his legacy of resisting foreign intervention and exemplifying Mexican nationalism, he has had towns, cities, streets and monuments named in his honor.
Death
He died at the age of 66 on July 18, 1872, from a heart attack.
