About Bernard Lewis
British-born American historian Bernard Lewis was a Professor Emeritus at New Jersey’s Princeton University. During his active days, he established himself as an authority in the study of Far Eastern and Near Eastern societies, otherwise termed as Oriental studies.
He also worked with the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. His knowledge on Islam’s history and culture earned him the description "the West's leading interpreter of the Middle East".
He was also of the opinion that the Ottomans had no intention of destroying Armenia in what was termed as the Armenian genocide. His ideas were made public through his numerous books including “The Assassins: A Radical Sect in Islam” and “The Muslim Discovery of Europe”.
Family
He was the son of Jane Levy and Harry Lewis. He became the husband of Ruth Hélène Oppenhejm in 1947 and together they had two kids.
Education
Lewis graduated from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (then known as School of Oriental Studies) in 1936. He later studied at the University of Paris.
Awards
He won the National Jewish Book Award and the American Academy of Achievement’s Golden Plate Award. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the British Academy.
Trivia
He was mostly criticized by Edward Said for “misrepresenting Islam”.
Lewis supported the infamous Iraq War.
