About Bernard Manning
Bernard John Manning was a popular 20th-century English comedian and club owner. He attained high status as a British TV personality, making notable appearances on programs such as “The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club” and “The Comedians”.
Background & Early Life
He was of Russian Jewish ancestry and was born in Harpurhey, Lancashire. He grew up and was educated in Ancoats, Manchester. At age 14, Manning quit school and worked in a greengrocery venture and a tobacco factory. However, he never considered becoming an entertainer until he entered the British Army, where he charged fellow soldiers for his singing and comic performances.
Career Highlights
In the 1950s, he led many big bands, including the Oscar Rabin Band and was a proficient vocalist and a compere. He then added comedy and humor into his singing and compering which was warmly received by his audience and earned him great acclaim. He founded the “Embassy Club” in 1959 and worked in many comedy clubs and northern “Working Men Clubs” throughout the 1960s. He also made his TV debut in 1971 on the comedy program “The Comedians”.
However, his performance was primarily characterized by content that featured racial stereotypes and minority groups. However, after receiving harsh criticism, his career gradually toned down.
Death
He died from kidney disease at age 76 on June 18, 2007.
