About Bernardo O'Higgins
Many historians have described Bernardo O'Higgins as one of the founding fathers of Chile. He played a leading role in the country’s struggle for independence. In 1811, he became the first person to be appointed as the deputy in Chile’s National Congress.
Six years later, he was named as the country’s Supreme Director and held that position until 1823. During that same period, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of Chile’s Army.
Family and Education
He was raised by Isabel Riquelme and Ambrosio O'Higgins, 1st Marquis of Osorno. He had a sister named Rosa Rodríguez Riquelme. Some accounts have hinted that he raised a daughter called Petronila, despite spending most of his time with Pedro Demetrio O'Higgins, an illegitimate son.
O'Higgins studied at the Royal College of San Carlos.
Death
Unfortunately, he developed several cardiac problems which later caused his death at the age of 64.
Recognition
Chile’s highest prize for foreign nationals (the Order of Bernardo O'Higgins) was named after him. The 1955 soccer team known as O'Higgins F.C. was named in his honor.
Facts
His name was put on the Antarctica-based research station called the Base General Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme.
As a military officer, he fought in the infamous Chilean War of Independence.
He accumulated lots of wealth as a landowner.
