About Bernhard Riemann
Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann, famously called Bernhard Riemann, was a brilliant mathematician in the 19th century who made many profound contributions to geometry, number theory, complex analysis, and theory of functions. He is also notable for his complex formulation of the “Riemann integral.”
Education & Early Years
He was born in the village of Breselenz in the “Kingdom of Hanover.” He schooled at Johanneum Luneburg for his high school education. His teachers were mesmerized by his incredible ability to solve complex mathematical problems. In 1846, due to his high interest in the Bible, he enrolled at the University of Gottingen to study theology. However, following the advice of famous mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, he transferred to the University of Berlin the following year to study mathematics.
Mathematical Contributions
He made profound contributions to complex analysis by introducing “Roman surfaces,” which provided new information on the geometric methods of complex analysis. In addition, his research laid the foundations of “general relativity” in mathematics, which birthed Albert Einstein’s “theory of relativity.”
His 1859 paper about the “Prime-counting function” is widely regarded as one of the most influential writings in modern “analytic number theory.”
Personal Life
He got married to Elise Koch in 1862, and they had a daughter.
