About Bertha von Suttner
This writer and pacifist was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and the first Nobel Prize laureate from Austria.
Early Life
Born into the noble family of Kinský, Bertha aspired to become an opera singer so she studied music and languages. However, she suffered from stage fright and was unable to perform. She resorted to marrying into a wealthy family but her fiancé Prince Adolf zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein died at sea.
Career
Bertha became Alfred Nobel’s secretary in 1876 whom she befriended but left after a while and started writing. Her first book was “Inventory of the Soul”, published in 1883. She went on to write other books including “The Machine Age” and “Lay Down Your Arms”, which were published in 1889.
Influenced by the International Arbitration and Peace Association, she soon became a leading peace activist. It is believed Bertha had an influence on Alfred Nobel's decision to establish a peace prize and she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905.
Personal Life
Bertha married Baron Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner who helped her with her writings.
