About Bertolt Brecht
Bertolt Brecht was an acclaimed German poet, playwright and theatre practitioner, who is known to have risen to prominence during the early 1920s and decided to move to Berlin where he was able to write the play, "The Threepenny Opera" alongside Kurt Weill.
Brecht is noted to have scored excellently in the theatrical scene where he is credited for composing the didactic, "Lehrstucke", which gained massive acknowledgement and earned him a place in the "epic theatre". He is noted to have founded the Berliner Ensemble in East Berlin.
Family Life
His father was Berthold Brecht - noted to have worked for a paper mill - while his mother was Sophie Brezing.
He was the brother to Walter Brecht. He got married to Australian actress and opera singer, Marianne Zoff in 1922, a short-lived marriage that ended in 1927.
He got married German actress and artistic director, Helene Weigel in 1930. His children include; Hanne Hiob, a poet and Barbara Brecht-Schall, an actress.
Achievements
He received the "Lenin Peace Prize" in 1954.
He picked up the "Kleist Prize" in 1922.
Brecht was awarded the "Obie Award for Best Musical" in 1956.
He earned the "Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics" in 1970.
Trivia
The house where he was born has been made a Brecht Museum.
Brecht was a dedicated Marxist all his life.
