Russell lost his mother, father, sister, and grandfather all within the span of 5 years. He was raised by his paternal grandmother who was very conservative unlike his own parents who were staunch outspoken liberals. In 1894, Russell married a young woman named Alys but by 1901 he confessed to her that he didn’t love her. Russell went on to have numerous affairs with upper-class woman and in 1921 finally decided to divorce Alys.
